Artefacting was commissioned to participate in No Longer Empty’s “This Side of Paradise” project at the Andrew Freedman Home in the Bronx New York City. Postponement to the project launch meant we sadly could not realize a project. However Artefacting videographer/editer Iosu Lopez and artist Alex White Mazzarella are happy to provide NLE with a video for their press conference and you with a preview to this dynamic site specific art project.
Artefacting will be exhibiting work from its Mumbai mission from Jan 3 - March 26, 2012 at the Cambridge Multicultural Arts Center, 41 2nd St., Cambridge MA, USA
Reception will be at Thursday Jan 5 (6-8pm)

A sad update on the ongoing demolitions in Dharavi’s industrious 13th Compound, the centre of activity of Artefacting Mumbai’s three month project last winter.
Artefacting Mumbai’s IMMERSION exhibition will have it’s first ever showing in Portland, Oregon at Mercy Corps’ Action Center Gallery. Exhibition runs from August 23rd through September 25th.

Update on the 13th Compound Exhibition that transformed the streets and industrial spaces of Dharavi into an art show, showcasing the works of Artefacting Mumbai to the local community and attracting an estimated 500 outsiders into Dharavi.

We are in the middle of a three month art project & immersion in the informal community of Dharavi - also known as Asia’s Largest Slum. Dharavi is right in the heart of Mumbai and is actually a beehive of industry and community.
Our initial project involved coming here to learn about the community in Dharavi through art - by making our own art as well as hosting art classes to people here. Our goal is to go beyond the imagery of a slum and embrace the humanity and identity of the people in this community.

Our first public painting; a new appearance for the office of our local partner Acorn Foundation.
In a previous blog entry I asked the rhetorical question “Is art an appropriate medium to connect in the context of a fight for survival?” Now that Alex is spearheading a weekly art class for 15-20 kids in Dharavi and we have a nice list of community art projects to implement, it is time to start addressing this question and find out what it is that we can offer this community in our short time here.
